The Mail Wasn't Delivered

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds," goes the postal carriers' motto. Yet we did not get the mail Monday, 23 February, 2026. Or as it will be know in the future, "the great blizzard of '26" ... you can bet I still ran though! Laps in my basement since the road wasn't plowed.

And today, Tuesday, after clearing my and neighbors driveways, I got back outside to get my mile in! I should also add I'm dealing with a significant ankle sprain (see the brace on my left ankle).

9+ Years of Daily Running

As another summer draws to a close, I complete another year of running every day .. 9 years now. That's over 100 months, over 3,300 days, and conservatively estimating .. over 10,000 miles.

During that time, I've:

Half Month of Half Marathons

What's two more? A half month of half marathons - 15 days in a row, total (with some overages) of 196.75 miles, in roughly 2 weeks.

So after Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15, I'm done with half marathons ... for this year.

Lucky 13 Challenge

Early last month I was thinking over some of my running challenges and thought, "I have yet to run 13 half marathons in 13 consecutive days". Moreover, if I was to do that and start on the first of a month, I would finish on the 13th of that month and if that day was a Friday - Friday the Thirteenth - I could call it the "Lucky 13 Challenge". Then I thought, what's the next time we get a Friday the Thirteenth ... and then I realized, it was this December - 3 weeks away. So much for training ...

Maine to Massachusetts

Today, I ran across New Hampshire - from Maine to Massachusetts - all along the seacoast.

A nice drive - for my wife and kid who hop-scotched me along the way to trade refilled water bottles and play on the beaches while they waited for me to catch up. An even nicer run to be all along the seacoast most of the way - nice views, cool weather, overcast with just a bit of rain. All-in-all a great run!

Welcome Back Students

This weekend, I decided to run to all the schools in our combined district.

Starting at one end - Bristol Plymouth Technical High School, and ending at the other - Somerset Berkley Regional High School ... and all the stops in between.

June 10K Everyday

My latest - and last planned challenge of this year - is done! I've been running at least the mileage of the month number every day of the month, so:

  • at least 1 mile every day in January,
  • at least 2 miles every day in February,
  • at least 3 miles every day in March,
  • at least 4 miles every day in April,
  • at least 5 miles every day in May,

and at least 6 miles every in June was so close to a 10K per day, that was the June challenge!

Today I finished ...

Metric Mile Math

It's too bad the conversion between miles and kilometers is just over 1.6 (closer to 1.609 kilometers / mile). At just under 1.6, closer to 1.592 (just 17 less meters) we'd have:

   5 km / 1.592 miles/km ~ 3.14 miles

Or as we in the maths field like to say, π (pi) miles.

And then of course, my 10 km a day would be:

   2 * 5 km = 10 km / 1.592 miles/km ~ 6.28 miles

or 2π miles, to take this full circle.

ONE MORE 10K TO GO IN JUNE!

10K .. every day .. for 30 days .. half way ..

I just passed the half way of running 6.21371 miles (10K) for every day in June - the sixth month of the year; hence, 6(+) miles every day. I'm getting tired and it's a bit unexpected.

Rhode Run Ultra

Is it possible to go out tomorrow, and with my base fitness run 50 km with no specific training for that distance?

No ...

... because I just did it today!

February Calendar Club-lite

I completed my February running goal of the "Calendar Club Challenge" for the first half of the month. For those that don't know, the "Calendar Club Challenge" is running a mile for the date of the month. So for example, February 1st is 1 mile, February 10th is 10 miles and February 14th - Valentines Day - half-way through the month, is 14 miles.
For reasons that will become clear later, I actually ran 2 miles on February 1st and I thought the extra 0.1 miles on the 12th, 13th and 14th made a nice trifecta of half marathons to start that week. I'll continue to keep the rest of my daily February mileage above 2 miles as we move towards March and the Goggins Challenge.

No More Laps

Just completed the Nick Symmonds #OneMoreLap challenge!

Started mid-January after I realized I was already on pace with my normal daily road runs and finished today on the track with 31 laps!

On (Off) Track with One More Lap

After looking at my running for the first two weeks of January, I see I am on track - that is to say, mileage wise - with the Nick Symmonds #OneMoreLap challenge.

Of course, this is all on road for me, not actually the track, but I'll just keep adding 1 mile starting January 17th (to be 5 miles that day) and every fourth day thereafter to keep pace and complete the challenge.

Run MAD - one month to go ...

According to the following tweet, on or about 20 July, 2016, I began my run-a-mile-everyday thing with the hashtag #RunMAD - as in - Run Mile-a-Day.

The goal was simple, run at least 1 mile every day for at least 1 year. Some rules:

  1. Run at least 1 contiguous non-stop mile every day
  2. A day is between 12:00:00a and 11:59:59p
  3. No "saving" miles (i.e., 2 miles today doesn't mean 0 miles tomorrow)
  4. Do this for at least 1 year from the start date

Unfortunately, I don't quite remember the official "start date" - if I tweeted the day I started or if I made sure I'd stuck with it for at least 1 week or so before posting so boldly. In any case, after 11 or so months with 1 or so left to go, I'm planning on extending to at least Labor Day, 2017 to make sure I've completed a full year. I've done this everyday so far, whats a few more ... ?

Fifth Annual RI 6 Hour Ultramarathon

On Sunday, November 10, 2013, I ran in the fifth annual RI 6 Hour Ultramarathon. My goal - as in past years, was to do at least as well as I did the previous year.

The official results place me 11/93 with an official total mileage of 40.515 miles in 5:57:28.1.

The table below documents my miles and times (by my watch).

Reach the Beach Relay - 2013

This year was a bit different. We only had 6 people, but only 2 of those 6 (Ashley and I) were willing to do the ultra. So we opted for a "half-team" option where RTB matched us with 6 people in a similar situation. As always, it was an adventure. We started counting and recording "pieces of flair" (i.e., "road kills") - number of people passed while running.
